Dr. Krause a Caregiver of the Year Nominee

Donald Krause MD (photo), Medical Director of Rheumatology and Medical Director for Quality at St. Joseph Hospital, has been nominated for the 2014 Maine Hospital Association (MHA) Caregiver of the Year Award.

Employed as a physician with St. Joseph Healthcare since 1996, Dr. Krause has practiced both Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and has also served as Chairman of the St. Joseph Hospital Ethics Committee.

Dr. Krause was instrumental in the establishment of one of the first Hospitalist programs in the country, based at St. Joseph Hospital. He has reached out to bring rheumatology care to underserved parts of the state and was one of the pioneers in introducing telemedicine to northern Maine.

This statewide award honors a caregiver from an MHA-member institution who demonstrates extraordinary commitment to the delivery of care to patients and their families. Each hospital CEO is limited to only one nominee, so being nominated truly is an honor, said MHA President Steven Michaud. “All of the nominees demonstrated the superior quality of care given at Maine hospitals,” Michaud said. “It was a challenge to select just one award winner from the nominees.”

The 2014 recipient of the Caregiver of the Year Award is Charlie Hendricks, MD, chief of surgery at Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor.
